The Name of Jesus

Sometimes I get frustrated when people say phrases like, “If you are ever hurt or overwhelmed, just say JESUS…” This statement seems very “Christian” in and of itself, but what does that mean? Why can one name make everything better? When I was young and ever had the slightest pain, my mom would give me Tylenol. Often I feel like we think that the name of Jesus is an extra strength Tylenol for our lives. There is no cure-all to our circumstance in the name of Jesus, but strength and healing in who he is and what he did for us.

In Acts 3, we see Peter and John performing a miracle on a disabled beggar outside of the temple. As the beggar asked for money, Peter and John gave him more than he could have every asked wanted. He was healed by Peter and John by the power, in the name of Jesus. After the miracle, Peter challenged the onlookers to repent and follow God the Father by faith in Jesus Christ, whom they had previously sentenced to death.

Acts 3:16

“By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.”

We see that even after Jesus had ascended into heaven, miracles were being performed in his name. Jesus’ miracles and those in his name had a purpose. He never healed to show off what he could do, but rather who he was. Jesus never healed anyone because they DIDN’T believe in Him, he healed because they DID believe in Him. That is what we must remember as our circumstances become trying. It is our faith and belief in Jesus that changes our outlook on what is ahead. Louie Giglio stated, “To have heroic faith, you must look to the hero of our faith, and that is Jesus Christ!”

We are all like the beggar outside the gate of the temple. Although, what cripples us may not be a disease. It could be our addictions, marriage, finances, families, or even our hobbies. The name of Jesus is not just a WORD that brings peace, but a reminder of hope, healing, and strength in our times of need. We call upon the name of Jesus in faith to recognize the power and greatness of His father! Speak the name of Jesus in your time of need and have faith that through the power of the Father we have eternal life, the promise of heaven and joy here on Earth!
