Miracles are Possible Through Faith
Mark 9:14-27
In this passage, there is a theme of Jesus’ concern and frustration with the unbelief of the people. These people were hearing of and saw with their eyes divine healing through Jesus but were still skeptical.
At this time in the Bible, Jesus, accompanied by Peter, James and John were descending from a mountain where they observed the transfiguration of Jesus. As they returned, they found a group of people gathered around the disciples. A man with a demon-possessed son had come to the disciples for healing, but they were unable to cast out the demon. Some commentaries go on to explain that the bystanders seemed to be gloating over the fact that the disciples were unsuccessful in their attempt to exercise the demon. In verse 19, Jesus exclaimed, “O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!” This is an excellent picture of the insufficiency of men to accomplish the supernatural. No power resides in man himself, only in Christ within us. Men will always let you down, but your faith in Christ is what allows His power to work in your life.
In verse 22, the father asks Jesus, “If you can do anything, have pity on us and help us.” As Jesus responds, He says, “If I can?” At first glance, one could read this and sense some arrogance coming from Jesus, but it is what word you emphasize that gives this response its connotation. The emphasis is not on “CAN,” but “I.” Jesus wants to the father to know that it is his faith in Him that will heal his son. Verse 23 concludes, “All things are possible to him who believes.”
Demons exist in many variations. They can be an addiction, worry, lust, idolatry or something as small as gossip. Whatever our sin of choice, does not change how we deal with it. In this very passage, Jesus says that all things are possible to those who believe. We must place our faith in the supernatural power of Jesus Christ and believe that no matter our circumstance, He possess the power to change our lives.
